Alili’s Story:

My story starts with a love of our Australian natural world built throughout my life travelling and living in many parts of the country. My early career as a signwriter introduced me to my love for the craft of screen printing. After over 30 years in a corporate career I made the decision to combine my love of drawing, painting and textiles and start Alili’s in 2024. I use linen for its natural beauty, strength, and its ability to become softer and more cherished with each use. I am committed to sustainability and the ethos of not impacting on the environment through my processes so use certified eco-friendly linen, inks, products and packaging.

My original Designs

Inspired by Nature’s Canvas

My design process is deeply rooted in the natural world. From the energy of the “Honey Bee” to the striking colours of the “Passionflower”, beautiful blossoms of the Eucalypt and the rustic charm of “Fallen Leaves Eucalyptus” the patterns are a celebration of the beauty that surrounds us. I draw inspiration from seasonal colours, the beauty of flora and fauna, and the unique textures found in the Australian landscape.

The Process

Handcrafted with Heart and Skill

The creation process is marked by meticulous attention to detail and a deep respect for traditional techniques. We use organic Eco-Tex certified linen, which is prewashed and ironed before the printing process. Each of my designs is hand-drawn a few times for each colour print and then transferred to screens for printing. They are then hand-printed to create a unique pattern. This can be done several times for each design with different coloured inks to obtain a particular design and colourway. This hands-on approach means that each piece is truly unique, bearing the subtle marks of the hands on technique. Slight variations in ink density and texture are not flaws, but rather testaments to the handcrafted nature of my work, adding to the charm and character of each item. After printing, the linen is heat pressed and ironed.

Sustainability is a core principle that guides every aspect of my work. I am deeply committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and honouring the natural world that inspires us. I choose Eco-Tex linen, a naturally eco-friendly material, for its inherent durability and lower environmental impact compared to other textiles. I also strive to minimize waste in the production process. The printing is mainly produced in my Victorian studio which is off grid and uses recycled water. Our commitment extends to our GOTS certified water based inks, and the packaging is made from recycled materials and is compostable. I believe in creating products that are made with care, for both people and the environment.
